Following the churning of the ocean and distribution of amrita, the demons—denied their share—launched a war against the gods at the shore of the Kshira Sagara. Led by Bali with a magical aerial vehicle built by Maya, the asuras used illusions to overwhelm the devas, until Lord Vishnu appeared with eight arms and destroyed key demons including Kalanemi, Mali, and Sumali. Indra ultimately defeated Namuchi using foam—neither wet nor dry—to circumvent his boon. Lord Shiva, hearing of Vishnu's Mohini form, requested to witness it, and was so enchanted by the illusion that even he, the conqueror of Manmatha, lost composure, demonstrating that none can overcome Vishnu's maya except by surrendering to Him.
