In this sacred episode from the First Canto of Srimad Bhagavatham, we explore the fateful moment when the young King Parikshit, while hunting and overcome with thirst and weariness, places a dead snake around the neck of the silent sage Shamika. The sage's son, Shringi, upon learning of this disrespect shown to his father, pronounces a curse that Parikshit shall die from a serpent's bite within seven days. This pivotal episode also marks the entry of Kali, the lord of the current age, who begins to exert his corrupting influence over the world and even over the mind of the great king. Together, these events set the stage for the entire narration of Srimad Bhagavatham, as Parikshit's impending death becomes the divine occasion for Shuka Maharshi to impart the highest wisdom.
