శ్రీమద్భాగవతం ప్రథమ స్కంధంలోని ఈ పవిత్రమైన ఘట్టంలో, అశ్వత్థామ ఉత్తర గర్భంలోని శిశువుపై బ్రహ్మాస్త్రమును ప్రయోగించిన మహాపాపమును గురించి తెలుసుకుంటాము. అర్జునుడు అశ్వత్థామను బంధించి ద్రౌపది సమక్షానికి తీసుకొస్తాడు, తన ప్రతిజ్ఞను నెరవేర్చుటకు సిద్ధంగా ఉంటాడు. తన పుత్రులను సంహరించిన అశ్వత్థామను చూసి కూడా, ద్రౌపది గురుపుత్రుడైన అతనిపై కారుణ్యం చూపి అభయమివ్వమని కోరుతుంది. శ్రీకృష్ణుడు న్యాయమును కాపాడుతూ అశ్వత్థామ శిరోమణిని తొలగించి, శక్తి కంటే కరుణయే ధర్మానికి గొప్ప ఆభరణమని నిరూపిస్తాడు.
